What a council star rating means
Councils inspect every licensed kennel and cattery and score two things: how well it meets animal welfare standards, and how risky the business is. The result is a star rating and a licence of one to three years.

Frequently asked questions
Do kennels and catteries need a licence?
Yes. In England, anyone boarding dogs or cats as a business needs a licence from their local council under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018. The council inspects the premises before granting or renewing it.
How can I check a kennel or cattery is licensed?
Licensed businesses must show their licence number on their website. You can check it against the council's public register of animal licences. We do this for you on every listing and show the date we last checked.
Is a 3-star kennel or cattery safe?
3 stars means the business meets all the minimum legal welfare standards and is low risk. 4 and 5 stars mean it also meets higher standards. Visit before you book, whatever the rating.
How much do kennels and catteries cost?
Dog boarding costs from £20 to £41 a day for one dog in the towns we cover. Cat boarding costs from £12 to £33.60 a day for one cat in the towns we cover. It depends on the town, the size of the room and how many pets share it. Many businesses don't publish prices, so owner-submitted prices help fill the gaps.
