How to choose a boarding kennel or cattery
A practical checklist for choosing dog kennels or cat boarding, from checking the licence to vaccinations, visits and booking ahead.

A good kennel or cattery is licensed, clean, calm and happy to answer questions. Use this checklist before you book.
1. Check the licence and star rating
Every business boarding dogs or cats in England must hold a council licence. Look for the licence number on the business website and check the council star rating. 5 stars is the highest; 3 stars means it meets all the minimum legal standards. See what star ratings mean.
2. Check vaccinations early
Kennels and catteries will ask for an up-to-date vaccination certificate on arrival and can refuse entry without one.
- Dogs: many kennels recommend a kennel cough vaccine. Some need it given at least two weeks before arrival, and some vaccine courses need restarting after a gap. Talk to your vet a month or more before you travel.
- Cats: catteries ask for proof of current vaccinations. Check your cat’s vaccination card well before your stay.
3. Visit first
Most kennels and catteries welcome visits, though some only at set times. On a visit, look for:
- Clean, dry, draught-free accommodation with heating in winter
- Separate areas for cats away from dogs
- Outdoor runs, and how often dogs are exercised
- Calm, attentive staff who know the animals by name
- Clear answers on feeding, medication and what happens if your pet is unwell
4. Questions to ask
- What’s the total price for my dates? Are arrival and departure days charged?
- Is there a deposit, and what’s the cancellation policy?
- Can my pets share? Can I bring their bedding, toys or food?
- Can you give medication, and is there a charge?
- Which vet do you use, and is there cover out of hours?
- What are your drop-off and collection times? Are you open on bank holidays?
5. Book early for peak dates
Summer holidays, October half-term and Christmas fill up fast. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, and check the deposit terms.
